Therapy for Depression
Therapy for Depression
Depression affects more than 10% of the population. We understand the social stigmas that come with being depressed and thus aim to help clients sort out their environmental, biological, and circumstantial factors while offering support and care through a very dark time in their lives.
Symptoms of depression:
- Depressed mood
- Loss of interest or pleasure in doing things that used to be enjoyable
- lack of motivation
- change in weight and appetite
- difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- feeling fatigued, tired, or without energy
- feeling worthless, shame, and/or guilty
- problems concentrating and making decisions
- feeling numb, irritated, or angry
- recurrent thoughts of death
- suicidal ideations or attempts
A combination of psychotherapy and medication has been found to be the most effective treatment for depression.
Our treatment includes:
Cognitive Restructuring: a CBT technique that focuses on recognizing and changing negative thoughts and beliefs that cause and reinforce depression
Behavioral Activation: a CBT technique that shifts from cognitions and feelings to focus on a client’s behavior and environment
Integrating exercise into psychotherapy reduces mild and moderate symptoms of depression, prevents the onset of recurrence of depression, and counteracts the weight gain caused by antidepressant medications.
Mindfulness-based techniques reduce ruminating and research shows that they can be as effective as antidepressants at preventing the relapse of depressive symptoms.
Referral for medication as needed (the need for medication varies greatly, case by case). Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) increase the level of serotonin (a chemical related to depression) in the brain.
You are not alone, and we can help. Many of our clients find relief in realizing their struggle does not own them, and they have options available to increase life satisfaction and hope for a better life once again.
